Jasprit Bumrah has been spot on in the T20 World Cup 2026 and India would like him to continue in the same vein when they clash against New Zealand in the final on Sunday.
Bumrah has been phenomenal in this tournament and has been India’s go-to bowler in the death overs because of his variations and ability to bowl yorkers at will. But Glenn Phillips ahead of the summit clash said that Bumrah despite being a fantastic bowler can also have an off-day in office. Moreover, Phillips had some sort of success against India’s star bowler in the bilateral series prior to the T20 World Cup.
“Bumrah is a fantastic bowler. He’s got so many variations. He hits the blockhole at the death incredibly well. You know, and he’s human as well. He is allowed to have a bad day, as are the rest of us. So hopefully we have a good day against him,” Phillips said.
Phillips didn’t quite agree with England’s strategy while playing Bumrah where they looked to see out his four overs and targeted other bowlers. But Phillips warned that the Kiwis would have a different approach while facing Bumrah.
“The way England played him in terms of trying to take on the last two overs, and give themselves as much of a chance as possible. That was the tactic that they’d employed.” Phillips said.
“It’s not necessarily going to be that, per se. As I said, a bowler is allowed to miss, and if he happens to miss, we do have to put it away. That also means that if he does bowl well, we do have to, I guess, accommodate for other things and adapt,” he added.
India will be under tremendous pressure while carrying the expectations of more than a billion people on Sunday. Speaking on that context and acknowledging India’s talent pool, Phillips said as a small nation with such less population it “feels fantastic” to compete with great teams in the world.
“Obviously, we have got a few less people in our country, to have the luxury of choosing from, which means obviously our high performance program has to be very specific and catered for the population that we’ve got,” Phillips said.
“But obviously, the talent that comes out of India is phenomenal. And, you know, they could probably pick three sides that would compete just as evenly in this World Cup.
“So for us to go out and compete with teams around the world, with such a small population is fantastic,” he added.
