T20 World Cup: India, South Africa plot course for blockbuster final clash rematch

In the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup, unbeaten South Africa will play New Zealand in Kolkata on Wednesday in an attempt to win their first World Cup championship. A potential rematch of the 2024 final against India is in store.

A repeat with India for the championship might be on the cards if Aiden Markram’s team defeats New Zealand for the second time in the tournament—they defeated them handily in the group stage.

Suryakumar Yadav’s reigning champions must first defeat Harry Brook’s England in a thrilling match on Thursday that is generating a lot of excitement in Mumbai.

However, after decades of earning a reputation for “choking” on the big stage, South Africa is unbeaten and a rising squad. Last year, they won the World Test Championship, their first international cricket title. Eight players from that team are in the T20 World Cup squad.

After their heartbreaking final loss to India two years ago, South Africa have been strong in every area and seem to have the form to end their white-ball drought. South Africa had one hand on the trophy while chasing 177 in Barbados, needing 26 runs in the final four overs with six wickets in hand. However, they finished on 169/8 after a stunning mini-collapse, and India won by seven runs.

In the group round, Markram led from the front, easily chasing 176 with 17 balls remaining after scoring 86 not out in a seven-wicket thrashing of New Zealand, their semi-final opponents.

Only South Africa has won each of their first seven games and they won their Super Eight table, defeating India and the West Indies along the way. Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand lost to England and had to rely on run rate to squeak ahead of Pakistan and into the final four.

All three of England’s Super Eight games were victories, and they seem ominously progressing in the competition. Moving up to bat at number three and delivering a brilliant century to spearhead a successful chase of 165 against Pakistan, Captain Brook has started to establish his dominance over the team.

Despite having all of their Super Eight matches in Sri Lanka, England will be accustomed with the circumstances because they played two of their group games in Mumbai. India were in serious trouble at 77/6 against the USA in their opening tournament match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium until Suryakumar’s 84 pulled them to victory.

They must endure the weight of history in addition to the expectations of 35,000 cricket-mad spectators in a crowded Wankhede stadium and hundreds of millions more watching on television.

The top-ranked T20 team in the world, India, is trying to make history by being the first to win two consecutive T20 World Cups and the first to lift the trophy at home.

India played their best cricket with their backs to the wall following their Super Eight first match loss to South Africa. In must-win matches, they scored 256 against Zimbabwe, and on Sunday they chased 196 against the West Indies thanks to Sanju Samson’s 97 not out.

England will try to shatter a billion Indian hearts, but South Africa is the clear favorite to be the first team into Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.
