‘India not hot favourites’: Mohammad Amir’s fresh dig before England clash

Mohammad Amir has not backed down despite the trolling he received on social media after making prediction on Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. The former Pakistan pacer had earlier predicted that India won’t progress beyond the Super Eights after their loss to South Africa. But with back-to-back wins against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, the Suryakumar Yadav-led team is now in the semifinals.

With India scheduled to play their semifinal against England in Mumbai on Thursday, Amir appearing a Pakistan TV show has made a fresh prediction.

“If I analyse it from a cricketing point of view, India are not playing good cricket. Check their fielding. They have dropped at least 3-4 catches and fumbled on the field. Every bowler, except for (Jasprit) Bumrah has gone for runs. I told you that (Hardik) Pandya never performs against big teams. He went for 40 runs in his four overs. West Indies also went after Varun Chakravarthy and the teams in the semifinals play well against spinners. I believe that India are still not hot favourites in the tournament,” Amir was quoted saying.

Amir also pointed to a ‘controversial’ decision involving Shimron Hetmyer. The former Pakistan player said if Hetmyer had not been given out, the game would have tilted in the West Indies favour.

What really happened? Hetmyer tried a slog shot off Jasprit Bumrah but missed and straight into the gloves of Sanju Samson behind the wickets. Bumrah appealed and the umpire gave Hetmyer out. However, Hetmyer was not convinced and decided to go for the review. The replays showed that there was an edge involved but Hetmyer was still not conviced and so also the West Indies dugout.

“I feel that Hetmyer’s dismissal was controversial. I don’t think he was out. If he had stayed there a little longer and the score had reached 220–230, India would have been knocked out,” said Amir.
