T20 World Cup: Pakistan to remove Salman Ali Agha as captain irrespective of result

Regardless of how the Pakistani team does in the current T20 World Cup, Salman Ali Agha will be fired as captain, and several other veteran players may have participated in their final competition for the country.

A trustworthy source within the Pakistan Cricket Board claims that Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman, is “unhappy” with the team’s performance in the marquee tournament.

“Naqvi is not happy at all because this time he was assured by the selectors, team management and his close aides in the board that the team was set to do well in the World Cup,” PTI quoted the source as saying on Saturday.

According to the source, Naqvi has decided to fire Salman as the T20 captain and will speak openly with selectors and head coach Mike Hesson about the future of a few players.

“Salman, Babar Azam, Usman Khan and a few others will probably see curtains on their T20 international career after the World Cup,” the source said.

Salman is being touted to be replaced as captain by Shadab Khan or Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The source also described how, even prior to the T20 World Cup, Hesson had informed Naqvi that, in order to meet the demands of contemporary T20 cricket, Pakistan needed to develop some younger players.

“So, after the World Cup, you can expect major changes in the Pakistan T20 set-up,” the source said.

Unless he accomplishes something spectacular against Sri Lanka and then in the knockout stages if Pakistan qualify, Babar Azam, a veteran of 145 T20 internationals, has most likely played his final T20 match.
