Rinku Singh to rejoin India squad ahead of must-win West Indies clash

Rinku Singh will rejoin the Indian squad in Kolkata on Saturday ahead of the team’s must-win Super Eight clash against the West Indies on Sunday, BCCI has confirmed.

“Rinku Singh will join the team tomorrow in Kolkata,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told news agency IANS.

Rinku had rushed home from Chennai early Friday for the last rites of his father Khanchand Singh, who passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Khanchand was admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida and was placed on ventilator support after his condition deteriorated. Rinku had then rushed to see his father but returned to join the squad in Chennai for the Super Eight match against Zimbabwe. He didn’t feature in the playing XI as Sanju Samson replaced him in the match.

Rinku’s father, who worked as an LPG cylinder deliveryman in Aligarh, played a key role in shaping Rinku’s career as a cricketer despite the family’s financial hardship.

The 28-year-old was a last-minute addition to India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, and the left-handed batter has scored 24 runs in five innings so far.

The defending champions will face West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal match on Sunday. The winner of the clash will join South Africa in the last-four from Group 1.
