Swashbuckling India opener Abhishek Sharma had been admitted to the hospital due to a stomach virus, raising severe concerns over his availability for Thursday’s T20 World Cup match in New Delhi against Namibia.
In order to ascertain the precise reason of the ailment, the daring left-hander has been under medical observation at a private hospital for the past two days. Despite Sharma’s discharge on Wednesday, the team management has not yet made a decision on his involvement.
Teammate Tilak Varma stated during the pre-game press conference that the situation is still unclear.
“There is still time to decide on his participation for tomorrow’s (Thursday) game. Abhishek has been discharged today (Wednesday), but we will take a call closer to the match,” PTI quoted Varma as saying.
“Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to stomach infection. Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem. It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.
Sanju Samson, out of the side due to poor form, was among the batters who had a good hit in the nets as he could get an opportunity if Abhishek doesn’t recover in time.
“We still have one more day before the game, so hopefully we’ll decide by tomorrow how he feels and then move forward accordingly,” added Tilak.
The Indian team management hopes to have Abhishek on the field for Sunday, February 15, when they play Pakistan in Colombo.
The 25-year-old reportedly left far earlier than the rest of his teammates on Sunday, after attending the meal at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s house.
