Steve Smith was sent in as backup for Australia’s skipper Mitchell Marsh, who was injured in the groin during training and will miss Wednesday’s opening T20 World Cup encounter against Ireland in Colombo.
In the event that opener Marsh is unable to participate in the tournament, Smith will be in Sri Lanka as a backup.
“Mitchell Marsh will miss the opening match of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup after sustaining a direct blow to the groin during training earlier this week,” said Cricket Australia in a statement.
“He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice,” CA added in the statement.
This is the latest setback to the team, following the injury withdrawals of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Australia’s top pace bowlers.
Despite his explosive Big Bash League form as an opening batsman, Smith, one of Australia’s most seasoned and formidable batsmen against spin, was controversially left out of the squad.
Marsh was replaced as Australia’s captain for Wednesday’s match against Ireland by Travis Head. After winning the toss, he decided to bat.
