After impressive batting performances from Kusal and Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana’s sharp spin bowling helped Sri Lanka defeat Ireland by 20 runs in their T20 World Cup match in Colombo on Sunday.
After a slow start, Sri Lanka rallied to post a valiant 163/6 thanks to a tough 56 not out off 43 balls from Kusal and a late surge from Kamindu Mendis, who hit 44 off 19 deliveries.
In response, Ireland was knocked for 143 in 19.5 overs thanks to the excellent control of leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (3/25) and Maheesh Theekshana (3/23).
Ireland’s spinners had tied down the hosts, but Kamindu hammered 44 off only 19 balls to regain the initiative just as the innings was about to collapse. After a boundary drought of 57 deliveries, Kamindu strode out for the Sri Lankans at 86-4 in the 14th over.
In a 17th over that cost Ireland 21 runs, he went on the attack after breaking the shackles with a smart reverse sweep. By the time he was dismissed, Sri Lanka were 153-6 with 8 balls left.
The fans were up cheering at his knock, which featured two imposing sixes and four fours. Wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who was unbeaten at 56 off 43 deliveries, performed the pivotal role at the other end.
Ireland left-arm spinner George Dockrell was the pick of the bowlers taking 2/17 in his four overs. Ireland could have done much better, but they dropped six catches that proved to be costly.
