‘Deeply sorry’: Harry Brook apologises for nightclub altercation in New Zealand

Harry Brook, the white-ball captain of England, apologized on Thursday, saying he was “deeply sorry” for an argument that occurred at a nightclub in New Zealand before the Ashes.

Brook’s remarks were made shortly after Australia’s convincing 4-1 series triumph over England in the fifth Test of the Ashes that concluded in Sydney.

According to the Daily Telegraph, on October 31, Brook, the Australian Test team’s vice captain and limited-overs captain, got into a fight with a nightclub bouncer.

The next day, in the third ODI at Wellington, England lost to hosts New Zealand, with Brook scoring 6 runs. After reporting the incident to team management, the 26-year-old Brook received a last warning about his behavior and was fined £30,000 ($40,000), according to the newspaper.

“I want to apologise for my actions. I fully accept that my behaviour was wrong and brought embarrassment to both myself and the England team,” he said in a statement, according to a AFP report.

“Representing England is the greatest honour of all, which I take seriously and I am deeply sorry for letting down my team-mates, coaches and supporters. I am determined to learn from this mistake and to rebuild trust through my future actions, both on and off the field. I apologise unreservedly and will work hard to ensure this does not happen again,” he added.

Following a team drinking session during the series, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has initiated an immediate investigation into the Ashes defeat, with off-field behavior being one of its top concerns.
