Australian Open champions to pocket $2.79m as prize money hits record high

The organizers of this month’s Australian Open announced on Tuesday that the total purse would grow by 16% to Aus$111.5 million (US$75 million), setting a record prize pool for competitors.

At the first Grand Slam of the year, the champions of the men’s and women’s singles would each get Aus$4.15 million (US$2.79 million), a 19 percent increase from Aus$3.5 million the previous year.

Even those eliminated in the first qualifying round will receive Aus$40,500 (US$27,200), while those defeated in the first round would receive Aus$150,000 (US$100,750).

According to tournament director Craig Tiley, it demonstrated Tennis Australia’s dedication to assisting tennis careers at all levels, from up-and-coming talent to Grand Slam winners.

“From boosting qualifying prize money by 55 percent since 2023 to enhancing player benefits, we’re ensuring professional tennis is sustainable for all competitors,” he said.

“By supporting players at all levels, we’re building deeper talent pools and more compelling storylines for fans.”

On January 18, the competition will begin at Melbourne Park, with Madison Keys and Jannik Sinner defending their titles.
