Fit-again Shreyas Iyer set to return to competitive cricket

When he plays for Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer will play in his first competitive game since suffering a spleen injury in October.

However, Iyer’s availability for the forthcoming series against New Zealand will be subject to fitness.

Iyer was admitted to the hospital after sustaining a spleen laceration and internal bleeding during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney.

Iyer’s release was announced by the BCCI in early November, and since then, the right-handed batter has been on track for a comeback.

The 31-year-old will represent his home team Mumbai in the 50-overs main domestic league, but his availability for the New Zealand series would depend on his fitness, according to a source at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

“Shreyas successfully completed the first 50-over RTP (return to play) match on January 2, 2026. He will be playing the Vijay Hazare match on January 6th as part of his second RTP match before final fitness clearance,” a PTI report quoted a BCCI official as saying on Saturday.

As a result, Iyer will be available to play with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his Vijay Hazare Trophy debut against Goa on December 31.

From January 11 to 31, India will play New Zealand in a three-match ODI series and five Twenty20 Internationals.
