Cristiano Ronaldo honours Novak Djokovic with first-ever Globe Sports Award – Watch

Following the Globe Soccer Awards, the inaugural Globe Sports Award was given out on Sunday night in Dubai. In an emotional moment, tennis legend Novak Djokovic received the honor from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Globe Sports Award, which was introduced this year, honors athletes whose careers demonstrate tenacity, longevity, and global influence. A new era in the sports awards was ushered in by its first ceremony.

When Ronaldo gave him the award, Djokovic claimed he was taken aback, but in a good manner.

“It’s a great surprise. I am always caught off guard, but in a positive way,” Djokovic said. “Receiving this from Ronaldo is a dream come true. I am thankful to call him a friend and someone who always inspires.”

Djokovic claimed that despite originating from diverse sports, elite sportsmen still share a universal bond.

“We are not part of the same sport, but we push each other,” he said. “Standing here together and talking about how sport can inspire children around the world is something we look forward to.”

A specially planned video tribute by Ronaldo was one of the evening’s most impactful moments. Intense tennis sounds of Djokovic’s iconic 54-shot rally from his 2013 US Open match against Rafael Nadal was combined with lyrics that flowed across the screen.

“I think people are not aware of the trials and tribulations we face, and some of the words on screen awakened emotions in me,” he said. “We all aspire to be like our sporting heroes and hold trophies and accolades, but the trials and tribulations people go through are not always seen.”

He emphasized that the lesson extended well beyond his personal experience. “This is not only [about] me, it’s all athletes,” Djokovic added.

In response, Ronaldo commended Djokovic as an inspiration for both the current and upcoming generations, noting that the Serbian player persisted in overcoming hardship. The tribute film highlighted the numerous difficulties Djokovic has encountered over the years, including age-related fights, career-defining losses, and personal and professional scandals.

Djokovic also praised Ronaldo’s drive in a humorous yet sincere homage. “I love Ronaldo’s serious looks, and he will reach a thousand goals,” he said, drawing a warm applause from the audience.
