Jasprit Bumrah under fire as Mohammed Azharuddin questions workload justification: ‘You are playing for the country’

Jasprit Bumrah came under fire from former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin for selectively selecting games in the name of workload management. Bumrah has long been India’s top bowler across all formats, but played just three games during the England trip. Before the series started, the 31-year-old’s workload for the tour was predetermined, as he was making his comeback from a lengthy injury layoff.

Bumrah claimed 14 wickets in the three matches he played before being rested for the series-deciding final Test, with India trailing 1-2. Although the visitors went on to win at The Oval and level the series, his absence sparked debate over his workload management.

Speaking to Mid-Day, Azharuddin stated both the player and the BCCI could make a decision if there was an injury problem. The former captain of India stated that since Bumrah is representing the nation, he ought to be able to handle his workload.

“If there is an injury issue, then the Board and the player has to decide. However, I feel once you are in the team, you can’t pick and choose your matches. There is workload, but at this level, you have to manage it. You are playing for the country,” said Azharuddin.

Fortunately for India, Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep rose to the occasion in the two matches Bumrah missed, steering the team to victory. However, Azharuddin questioned what would happen if India found themselves in a crunch situation requiring their ace bowler.

“It was a different story that Siraj along with Prasidh [Krishna] and Akash Deep rose to the occasion and we were fortunate that we could win without Bumrah, but what happens if India needs Bumrah badly in a particular situation?” said Azharuddin.

Following the England tour, Bumrah is now reportedly being considered for the Asia Cup, which begins on September 9.
