Jasprit Bumrah and the risk factor: Why India can’t afford to push pace ace

According to former cricketer Robin Uthappa, controlling Jasprit Bumrah’s workload is crucial to keeping him match fit because his “demanding action” and “high pace” impose tremendous strain on his body.

Bumrah returned for the five-match T20I series after being rested for the three-match ODI series against the visiting South Africans. In the inaugural Twenty20 International at Cuttack, he was crucial to the hosts’ enormous 101-run victory.

The 32-year-old played in the T20I series despite being rested for the October ODIs against Australia.

“He is an absolute match-winner, and managing his workload is crucial. Fast bowling is probably the toughest skill in the sport, and Bumrah does it at high pace with a demanding action.” said Uthappa on JioStar’s Cricket Live.

“You want to protect that, but at the same time, you want him to play enough cricket. We’ve seen glimpses of his brilliance, and hopefully he can build consistency over the next few games heading into the World Cup,” added the former India cricketer, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2022.

Due to poor vision brought on by a thick layer of smog, the fourth Twenty20 International in Lucknow was called off without a ball being played on Wednesday. The Proteas must win the series’ final game in Ahmedabad on Friday to level the series.
