‘Be fearless’: Gambhir, teammates send powerful message to India women ahead of World Cup final

Before the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup final versus South Africa, which will take place at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2, the Indian men’s cricket team offered their best wishes to Harmanpreet Kaur and her team.

The men’s team, which is presently in Australia for a bilateral series, took an opportunity to record an emotional message for their counterparts as India is poised to win a historic first global title. Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, and head coach Gautam Gambhir were among those who wished the Women in Blue well.

Confidence and serenity were recurring themes in the video message that the BCCI released on Saturday. “On behalf of the entire support staff and the Indian team, I want to wish the women’s team all the very best,” Gambhir said. “Enjoy the occasion, be fearless. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake. You’ve already made the entire country proud.”

The same thoughts were expressed by Suryakumar Yadav, who is captaining India’s T20 team in Australia. “Wishing the women’s team all the very best for the World Cup final. Just enjoy the occasion, be yourself. I think you have had an amazing campaign till now,” he said.

Jasprit Bumrah, who is renowned for his poise under pressure, contributed a straightforward but insightful statement. “Just enjoy the occasion. You don’t get to play a lot of World Cup finals. You don’t need to do anything different; you are playing really well. Just back yourself and enjoy the moment. Give your best and everything else will take care of itself,” he said.

The squad led by Harmanpreet Kaur has had a great tournament, demonstrating perseverance and consistency along route to the championship. A victory on Sunday would be India’s first Women’s World Cup victory and might be a turning point in the development of women’s cricket in the nation.

With the dreams of a billion spectators and the unwavering backing of their international teammates, the players will take the field under the DY Patil lights.
