Shreyas Iyer out of ICU, condition stable after on-field injury: Report

After sustaining a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia, Shreyas Iyer was moved out of the intensive care unit in Sydney, which was a major relief for Team India, according to Cricbuzz.

His condition is now stable and getting better, according to the BCCI.

Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, was previously admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to internal bleeding from a rib cage injury he sustained during the third match against Australia.

Iyer was taken to the hospital shortly after returning to the dressing room on Saturday after making a spectacular catch while going backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. It appeared that Iyer had injured his left rib cage in the process.

Iyer laceration injury to the spleen was disclosed by BCCI in a statement.

”Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

”Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the BCCI’s statement read.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” a PTI report quoted a source privy to the development as saying on condition of anonymity.

“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding.”

When Iyer returned to the dressing room, his vital signs fluctuated, prompting the BCCI medical team to take immediate action.

“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.

Iyer was initially predicted to be sidelined for roughly three weeks, but it’s possible that the recuperation process would take longer.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.

Before being deemed well enough to return to India, the 31-year-old is anticipated to stay in the Sydney hospital for at least a week.

India’s T20 team, that is set to play a five-match series against Australia, does not include Iyer.
