For the first two games of the forthcoming Ranji Trophy season, which begins on Wednesday, Bihar has named 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi as their vice-captain. The side will be led by Sakibul Gani.
The Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna will host Bihar’s Plate League season opener against Arunachal Pradesh starting on October 15. The Bihar Cricket Association made the team announcement late on Sunday.
After failing to record a single victory in the previous Ranji season, Bihar was demoted to the plate league. During the 2023–24 season, Suryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 12.
In addition to being a member of India’s Under-19 teams that toured England and Australia, he also became the youngest player (13), to sign an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract.
Prior to this year’s season, Suryavanshi was selected by the Rajasthan Royals at the age of 13, making him the youngest player in the IPL.
Against Gujarat Titans, the left-handed batsman set a new world record by being the youngest player in men’s cricket (14) to hit a century in Twenty20s – that came off 35 balls for RR. It was also the IPL’s second-fastest century.
Since he is likely to be included in India’s squad for the Under-19 World Cup, which will take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia early next year, Suryavanshi is unlikely to play the entire season for Bihar.
