Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has told selectors chairman Ajit Agarkar that he is unable to handle the demands of red-ball cricket at this time because of a stiff back. He has also requested that he not be considered for the forthcoming home Test series against the West Indies.
It has been revealed that Shreyas has temporarily stepped away from the red-ball format after withdrawing from the India A’s current second four-day unofficial Test match against Australia A in Lucknow.
In the absence of the Mumbaikar, Dhruv Jurel took over as captain of the India A team.
“While he informed the India A’ team management that he has gone to Mumbai for personal reasons, he has informed chairman of the selection committee that his back can’t take rigours of first-class and Test cricket for the time being,” a BCCI source said.
Shreyas has even put his request in writing, addressing a formal letter to chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The development casts doubt over his participation in the Ranji Trophy season, beginning October 15, despite having recently led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final.
According to information obtained, Shreyas will now travel to Bengaluru to undergo additional back testing and recuperation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
Shreyas has a history of back issues and also felt uncomfortable during the previous domestic season.
