Rohit Sharma not retiring after Lord’s ODI: BCCI secretary

Contrary to rumors, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia informed PTI in an exclusive interview that Rohit Sharma’s farewell game for India will not be the final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday.

There were many rumors that the selectors had instructed the 39-year-old former India captain that they wanted to look beyond him and give Yashasvi Jaiswal a long rope.

Saikia clarified, nevertheless, that the beloved “Hitman” of Indian cricket isn’t retiring.

“There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia said.

“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI secretary confirmed.

It is known that the way head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar approached the matter did not sit well with the BCCI top brass. Following a day of talks with all the stakeholders, the BCCI secretary released an official statement.

It should be noted that Saikia, a well-known lawyer, and a powerful former BCCI officer both had a part in bringing the delicate matter to a rational conclusion.

Rohit had already voiced his disapproval of the way a senior cricketer was being treated, and it seems that he was very upset that he was told about the decision before a crucial match.

Additionally, Saikia insisted that Rohit will continue to represent India as long as “he is in the scheme of things.”

Rohit is now 13 games away from being a member of the “Exclusive 300 ODI” group.

One of the true white ball greats has consistently insisted that his sole motivation for working hard is to represent the nation in the 2027 major tournament after losing out on the trophy in 2023.
