The FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday will have plenty of star power both on and off the pitch, with US President Donald Trump set to attend the match and the famous trophy arriving in style inside a custom-made Louis Vuitton trunk.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Thursday that Trump will be present at the final at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.
“We look forward to the final on Sunday, and I know the president is looking forward to attending,” Leavitt told reporters.
She described the tournament as “the most watched, most secure and most successful World Cup in American history.”
Leavitt said she did not know which team Trump would be supporting in the final, adding with a smile, “I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you.”
Before Sunday’s showpiece, Trump is also scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York on Friday.
Meanwhile, football’s most coveted trophy will make its way to the stadium in a specially designed Louis Vuitton trunk.
The French luxury fashion house has created a custom case featuring its signature monogram, gold-plated brass corners and a large golden “V”, representing both “Victory” and “Vuitton”. Inside, the trunk is lined with beige leather and includes a special patch celebrating Louis Vuitton’s partnership with FIFA.
This is the fifth straight men’s World Cup for which Louis Vuitton has designed the trophy trunk, having previously created the cases for the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
“For over a decade, Louis Vuitton and FIFA have shared a commitment to excellence and a belief in the power of sport to inspire and unite people,” Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari said in a statement.
The FIFA World Cup trophy is usually kept at the FIFA Museum in Zurich, making its journey to the final one of the most symbolic moments of the tournament.
