Pele’s 1958 World Cup final jersey becomes second most expensive ever sold

A jersey worn by Brazilian football legend Pele during the 1958 FIFA World Cup final has been sold for a staggering $4.9 million at an auction in the United States.

Pele was just 17 years old when he scored twice to help Brazil beat hosts Sweden 5-2 and win their first-ever World Cup title.

The iconic blue jersey was auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, where an anonymous buyer outbid four others to secure the historic piece of football memorabilia.

It is now the second most expensive football jersey ever sold at an auction.

The record is still held by Diego Maradona’s Argentina shirt from the famous 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England, which sold for $9.3 million.

Maradona scored both goals in Argentina’s 2-1 victory, including the controversial “Hand of God” goal, when he punched the ball into the net before it crossed the line.
