A performance assessment has been triggered by the Indian men’s cricket team’s T20I series loss to England, which came after the team’s defeat in the fourth match in Bristol.
The board will evaluate the coaching staff’s and players’ performances, according to BCCI sources.
The source asserts that despite head coach Gautam Gambhir’s contract being valid until 2027, his role has also been questioned in light of the team’s recent results.
In the fourth Twenty20 International of the five-match series, India, under the leadership of recently appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, lost by 9 wickets. With the first game washed out, the victory handed England an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the series. Before suffering a crushing 125-run loss in the third T20I, where they were bowled out for 76 while chasing a target of 202 runs, India lost the second T20I by four wickets.
Notably, after losing 0-2 to Ireland before the England tour, this is India’s second straight T20I series loss as the reigning T20 World Cup champions. India’s loss to Ireland was also their first-ever against the minnows.
Both series losses followed the BCCI’s audacious decision to choose Shreyas Iyer captain in place of seasoned campaigner and 2026 T20I World Cup winning captain Suryakumar Yadav.
The victory in Bristol was England’s first-ever victory against India in a two-match or longer bilateral Twenty20 International series.
