Erling Haaland broke Ivory Coast hearts on Tuesday, scoring a dramatic late winner as Norway secured a 2-1 victory at Dallas Stadium to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Haaland’s 86th-minute goal, his fifth of the tournament, sealed Norway’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage qualification and set up a blockbuster last-16 clash with Brazil in New York on Sunday.
The Manchester City striker, who was rested for Norway’s 4-1 defeat to France in their final group match, was thrilled after helping his country create history.
“It’s unbelievable,” Haaland said. “It’s been 28 years since Norway last reached the Round of 16. This means so much to everyone back home. I feel like this can change Norway forever. There’s a real sense of unity, and it’s emotional to see.”
“Now we get to play Brazil in the Round of 16. That’s something special, and we’re just enjoying this incredible journey.”
Ivory Coast started brightly and looked the more dangerous side in the opening stages. Nicolas Pepe caused problems down the right, while Ghislain Konan came closest to scoring when his shot found the side netting.
Pepe also had a good chance after being picked out by Yan Diomande, but he failed to connect properly, allowing Norway’s defence to clear the danger.
Haaland had little impact early on, but Norway gradually grew into the game as half-time approached.
After missing a headed chance from Alexander Sorloth’s cross, Norway began to dominate possession and create better opportunities.
Their pressure paid off in the 39th minute. Martin Odegaard found Antonio Nusa on the left, and the winger cut inside before curling a superb shot into the top corner to give Norway a 1-0 lead.
Haaland nearly doubled the advantage moments later but was denied by a brilliant last-ditch block, while Sorloth’s header flashed across the face of goal.
Ivory Coast responded after the break. Emmanuel Agbadou headed wide before goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced an excellent save to deny Pepe after Guela Doue’s effort had been blocked.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 74th minute through substitute Amad Diallo. The Manchester United winger exchanged passes with Pepe, skipped past two defenders and drilled a powerful shot that bounced beyond Nyland, sparking wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players.
However, Norway had the final word.
Substitute Oscar Bobb combined with Patrick Berg inside the penalty area, and Berg squared the ball for Haaland, who calmly finished into an empty net in the 86th minute.
Nyland then made an important save from Amad’s stoppage-time free-kick to preserve Norway’s lead and send his side into the knockout stage.
