Los Angeles Olympics 2028: ICC unveils qualification path for men’s and women’s cricket

To automatically qualify for the Olympics in Los Angeles, the Indian men’s team must be ranked first in Asia in the ICC T20 rankings by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the top four women’s teams from the current World Cup in England will receive early spots.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the qualifying requirements on Monday. After a century away, cricket is making a comeback to the Olympics, with six teams competing in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Four quota spaces from various continents are filtered based on men’s rankings.

“These will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible NOCs (National Olympic Committees) continentally (i.e. the top ranked NOCs from different continents), taken from the ICC Men’s T20 Team Rankings, resulting in four teams in total,” the ICC stated.

December 31, 2026, has been kept as the deadline.

The best-ranked eligible NOCs from each continent at the T20 World Cup will receive four quota spots for women, “resulting in four teams in total (i.e. the top standing NOC from different continents at the conclusion of the competition).”

“Each eligible team will obtain one quota place for its NOC.” Australia (Oceania), South Africa (Africa), and England (Europe) appear to have secured the early spots based on this criteria after making it to the semifinals.

“As Great Britain takes part in the Olympics, only one British nation, England, will be considered as part of the quotas,” the ICC stated.

The West Indies is in the top four of the current World Cup semifinal. After the tournament’s final standings are finalized, India’s fate will be revealed. But because it is a composite ICC member that represents several Caribbean countries and isn’t recognized as an IOC NOC, it can’t compete in the Olympics or get a quota spot as a single body.

The NOCs of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands make up the West Indies.

These nations do not participate separately in ICC competitions. Because they have “satisfied the ICC criteria of appearing on a ranking of 15 or better in the Rankings during the qualification period,” the host nation, the United States of America, is assured one quota spot each in the men’s and women’s competitions.

Furthermore, the dates of the Final Olympic Global Qualification Tournament (FOGQT), which will be contested independently for both genders, have not yet been decided.

The next eight eligible teams that are ranked highest but have not yet qualified will compete for one spot in each of the men’s and women’s divisions.

The ICC will host a West Indies Nations Regional Tournament to choose which NOC will represent the region at the Final Qualifier if the West Indies is one of the top eight teams who have not yet qualified.

For the final qualifier, there is no upper restriction on continental presence.
