Michael Atherton says Ben Stokes’ retirement timing raises ‘a number of questions’

Ben Stokes’ surprise international retirement between a Test match has stunned many including former England captain Michael Atherton, who has questioned the timing of the announcement.

Stokes shocked the cricket world by announcing that the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge would be the final international match of his career. The announcement came shortly before tea on the fourth day, with the match still finely balanced. The three-match series was level at 1-1, and England were chasing a challenging target of 373 in the fourth innings.

Stokes had informed his teammates about his decision before play began on Sunday but did not explain why he was retiring, saying the “reasons can wait.”

The timing of the announcement, made in the middle of a live Test match and soon after his return following disciplinary issues, immediately sparked debate.

Atherton, speaking on Sky Sports commentary, described the announcement as “extraordinary” and questioned why Stokes had chosen that particular moment to reveal his decision.

“It’s an extraordinary moment, a stunning moment, and it begs a number of questions, why and why now?” Atherton said.

“In the middle of a day’s cricket with still a day to go with a match to win, draw or lose and a series on the line.”

Stokes’s retirement announcement came after a difficult few weeks.

He missed England’s heavy defeat in the second Test at The Oval after being ruled out following a London nightclub incident involving teammate Gus Atkinson. The two players had broken the team’s midnight curfew while celebrating England’s victory in the first Test.

Stokes later received a written warning for his conduct but faced no further punishment. He returned to captain England in the third Test at Trent Bridge, but his comeback was overshadowed by the surprise announcement that it would be his final international match.

Atherton suggested Stokes may have shown signs of emotional and leadership fatigue during the series.

“But I think there have been some signs there throughout this series, both at Lord’s initially when he looked like a man who had been leading England for four years,” he said.

“He missed the Oval for disciplinary reasons, back for this Test match and he has decided that enough is enough.”

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan said something significant must have changed in Stokes’ thinking, especially since he is under contract until next year and England still have a home Ashes series to play.

“Clearly something has triggered in his mind,” Vaughan said.

“You look at his contract that he’s got until next year – there’s a home Ashes series next year.”

“There were so many rumours about fallouts but I do hope that wasn’t the case, I hope that he just woke up one morning and said he’d had enough. He’s given it everything for such a long period of time.”
