England cricket in turmoil amid drink spiking, sexual assault allegations

A well-known figure in English cricket is being investigated by police for allegedly poisoning alcohol and sexually assaulting two women.

The man, who is reportedly in his 40s, was questioned under caution by Scotland Yard in June after a complaint was connected to an incident at a bar in the SW6 neighborhood of south-west London, which includes Parsons Green and Fulham, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has not yet responded.

“We are currently investigating allegations of spiking and sexual assault against two women that took place on Thursday, 22 May at a pub in the SW6 area,” read a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

“Two women are believed to have been spiked with one also allegedly sexually assaulted. A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, 5 June. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.”

The case has surfaced at a time when pressure is mounting on cricket’s authorities to curb wrongdoing in the sport.

Last month, Chris Haward, managing director of the Cricket Regulator, an independent organization charged with administering disciplinary issues, emphasized: “Removing sexual misconduct from the game is a priority.”

Two instructors have been charged by the Regulator in unrelated events throughout the last 12 months. One received a six-month suspension in November for “inappropriate sexual behaviour” during a county pre-season tour, while another was suspended for up to nine months in August for sending “sexualised and inappropriate” images to junior female staff members.
