In a significant setback for India, off-spinner Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out of the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup due to an ankle injury. Prema Rawat, an uncapped leg-spinner, has been named her replacement.
During India’s 95-run triumph over the Netherlands at Headingley, Leeds on Wednesday, the 23-year-old Patil was hurt. Patil twisted her ankle while trying to stop the ball during the Powerplay’s last over.
The team physiotherapist rushed onto the pitch as soon as she was seen clutching her right leg. Patil bowled just one ball before being stretchered off due to his injured ankle.
“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has approved Prema Rawat as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil in the India squad,” an ICC media release stated.
Rawat, 24, receives her first call-up to the senior national squad. She has played six games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru throughout her two seasons in the Women’s Premier League.
Rawat was a part of India A team that is scheduled to travel to England for a six-match white-ball series, starting on Saturday with the first Twenty20 match in Northampton.
She also made an impression at the Rising Stars Women’s Asia Cup, which India A won with eight wickets at an economy rate of 4.27.
The setback adds to Patil’s regrettable history of ailments in recent years. She was unable to compete in the T20 World Cup in July 2024 due to a broken finger. After that, she struggled with shin splints in both legs before experiencing a stress reaction in her wrist, making the most recent ailment yet another disappointing setback in an injury-plagued stage of her career.
