Switzerland managed to breach a resolute Bosnia and Herzegovina defence by scoring four late goals to clinch a 4-1 win, with Johan Manzambi finding the net twice while substitute Ruben Vargas and captain Granit Xhaka also scoring.
Bosnia’s defence was stubborn and did well to repel Switzerland’s attacks until the 74th minute in the Group B clash, it was broken down by 20-year-old Manzambi to strike three minutes after coming to the pitch as substitute.
A red card for Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic soon made an already difficult situation even worse and Switzerland took full advantage by scoring three more goals, including a late penalty from Xhaka.
The win leaves Switzerland on four points. They now need just one point from their final group match against Canada on Wednesday to secure a place in the Round of 32. Bosnia, who have only one point, will face Qatar in their last group game.
Switzerland controlled most of the first half, but Bosnia defended deep and in large numbers around their penalty area, making it difficult for the Swiss to create clear chances.
Just before half-time, veteran striker Edin Dzeko found himself in promising positions, but Bosnia were unable to make the most of their opportunities.
Bosnia came out aggressively after the break and picked up two yellow cards in quick succession. One of them went to Dzeko, and the 40-year-old striker was later substituted.
The breakthrough finally arrived when substitute Winsley Manzambi fired a right-footed shot at goal. Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj got a hand to it, but could only help the ball into the net.
The goal lifted Switzerland, who began attacking with greater confidence and intensity. Bosnia’s defence, which had been solid for much of the match, started to lose its shape under pressure.
With 10 minutes remaining, Muharemovic was shown a red card for bringing down Breel Embolo just outside the penalty area as the striker raced towards goal.
Switzerland quickly made their numerical advantage count. A few minutes later, Ruben Vargas finished off a flowing attack with a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
The result was effectively sealed in the 90th minute when Manzambi grabbed his second goal of the match after being set up by Vargas.
Bosnia did manage a late consolation goal in stoppage time. Substitute Ermin Mahmic volleyed home from inside the box shortly after coming on.
But Switzerland had the final word. Xhaka calmly converted a penalty after Djibril Sow was fouled by Amar Memic, sending the Swiss supporters home delighted.
