PCB set to decide Shan Masood, Sarfaraz Khan’s future after Test debacle in Bangladesh

This weekend, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s top officials will convene here to make a decision regarding the future of head coach Sarfaraz Khan and Test captain Shan Masood.

PCB chairman Mohsin Khan will be present at the meeting, which will decide whether or not Masood and Sarfaraz, who oversaw the team’s 0-2 loss in Bangladesh, will continue leading the squad for their next assignments in England and the West Indies.

“The most important decision is about whether Shan Masood will continue as Test captain for the tours of West Indies and England,” PTI quoted a PCB source as saying.

“Many selectors and some board officials believe it is time to give Salman Ali Agha the chance to lead the Test side now,” the source said, adding that despite Masood’s desire to continue, the outcome in Bangladesh could go against him.

In white-ball formats, Agha already oversees the national team. According to the source, Sarfaraz’s contract with the PCB has not yet been finalized, and Younis Khan, the former captain, is rumored to be the new head coach.

“For the time being it appears that Sarfaraz will remain until a deal is reached with Younis, who has always been a tough negotiator when it comes to holding any post in the board,” the official said.

Another candidate for the head coaching position is former captain Mohammad Hafeez, but despite talks between PCB officials and both, nothing has been decided.

“The situation will become clear by Saturday when the meeting is scheduled but apparently Mohsin Naqvi wants changes as he is not satisfied with the overall progress of Pakistan cricket,” the official said.

Additionally, Naqvi seeks to lessen the workload for PCB officials who have multiple responsibilities. Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz, Aaqib Javed, and former captain Misbah Ul Haq are currently the national selectors; some of them also serve in other capacities on the board.

Mike Hesson, the head coach for white ball forms, is also involved in the selection process. In the meanwhile, the meeting may also decide to select a director for international cricket.
