Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s India nod record, Shreyas Iyer takes over India’s T20 reins

Shreyas Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as captain of India’s Twenty20 International team on Saturday, and teenage tornado Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was included in the squad for the double tour of England and Ireland.

At 15 years and 71 days old, Sooryavanshi becomes the youngest ever player to feature in an Indian cricket team, surpassing the long-standing record held by the great Sachin Tendulkar.

India will play a five-match T20I series against England from July 1–11 after visiting Ireland for two T20Is on June 26 and 28.

Shreyas made his first comeback to the national T20 team ever since a game against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023.

The selectors chose Shreyas to succeed T20 World Cup 2026 captain Suryakumar because of his outstanding leadership qualities in the IPL, which included leading KKR to the title in 2024 and PBKS to the final in 2025, as well as two seasons of reliable batting performances.

Middle-order batsman Tilak Varma was named Shreyas’ deputy, while pacer Prince Yadav, who had a strong season with the Lucknow Super Giants, was selected for the series against England and Ireland.

After the 15-year-old earned the Orange Cap in IPL 2026, hitting 776 runs with a hundred and five fifties at a strike rate of 237.30, Sooryavanshi’s participation looked inevitable.
