Shreyas Iyer poised to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain for UK tour

When the national selection panel convenes in Mumbai on Saturday to choose teams for the white-ball tour of the UK and the ensuing Asian Games in Japan, Shreyas Iyer will formally take Suryakumar Yadav’s place as India’s new T20 captain.

Two Twenty20 Internationals against Ireland will take place in Belfast on June 26 and 28 as part of the UK tour. On July 1, the team will travel to England for five Twenty20 Internationals and three ODIs.

The team is being revealed ahead of schedule in order to fulfill the deadlines established by the organizers of the Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi, Nagoya, from September to October.

It is anticipated that 15-year-old batting star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi would receive his first senior squad call-up, and promising Mumbai Indians batsman Tilak Varma will take over as vice-captain.

As previously reported, Suryakumar is being removed from the squad due to his poor performance over the past 18 months, during which he is accused of playing with a wrist injury, in addition to being fired as India’s captain despite winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

It is anticipated that the 31-year-old Iyer, who was not included in the T20 World Cup team, will bat at number four.

Having led three separate teams (Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings) to the IPL finals and once won the trophy, he is being acknowledged for being one of the most astute IPL captains.

Being the first IPL captain to lead three different setups to the championship round is a significant accomplishment that gives him confidence in his leadership.

Additionally, he has maintained his batting form while captaining, with the exception of this year’s free fall by Punjab Kings during the second half of the IPL following a strong start.

Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the selectors, will declare two different teams for the Asian Games, which will take place in Japan in September and October, and the UK Tour.

Even though the event coincides with a bilateral white-ball home series against the West Indies, the BCCI will play its best team.

Sooryavanshi is probably going to be a member of the T20 team that Tilak Varma is leading at the Asian Games.

Pacer Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey, a left-arm spinner who is already in the Test and ODI team for the series against Afghanistan beginning on Saturday, are two fresh players who might join the fray.

It will be intriguing to watch if 36-year-old Bhuvneshwar Kumar receives a recall following a 28-wicket haul in the Indian Premier League, even though the selectors have been adamant about moving on from Mohammed Shami.

Bhuvneshwar has a strong chance of succeeding in English conditions because he has excelled on flat surfaces. But Agarkar’s mentality has always been to consider the bigger picture.

The committee would consider if Bhuvneshwar, who will turn 39 in 2028, can play both the T20 World Cup in Australia and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
