IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaks Chris Gayle’s long-standing sixes record

Rajasthan Royals’ 15-year-old teenage tornado Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is continuing to rewrite IPL history by shattering one of Chris Gayle’s most famous batting records.

The youthful left-hander surpassed West Indies legend Gayle’s 2012 record of 59 sixes in an IPL season.

Sooryavanshi accomplished the feat while playing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator in Mullanpur on Wednesday.

Sooryavanshi, who needed seven more sixes to beat Gayle’s record before the game, lifted Sakib Hussain over deep extra cover for the record.

Sooryavanshi had hit a blistering 97 from 27 balls, including five boundaries and half a dozen sixes, before being caught by Smaran Ravichandran off Praful Hinge’s bowling on the last delivery of the eighth over.

Most sixes in an IPL edition:

  • 65: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (2026)
  • 59: Chris Gayle (2012)
  • 52: Andre Russell (2019)
  • 51: Chris Gayle (2013)
  • 45: Jos Buttler (2022)

In addition, Sooryavanshi broke the previous record set by Rishabh Pant, who scored 600 runs for the Delhi Daredevils in 2018, to becoming the youngest batter to do so in an IPL season.

Throughout the season, the teenager has been unstoppable, using aggressive strokeplay to target some of the top bowlers in the world. He has already scored four half-centuries and one century.
