A high-level ICC team including a top BCCI official are expected to reach Sri Lanka to take stock of the situation after the government appointed an interim committee to run the island nation’s cricket board.
After Shammi Silva resigned as president including the executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage on April 29 appointed a nine-member interim panel to run the cricket board.
The committee was named the Cricket Transformation Committee and will be headed by opposition politician Eran Wickramaratne. Former Sri Lanka cricketers Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny are also part of the panel.
The interim committee’s main job will be to bring reforms and improve the functioning of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The exact reason behind the resignation of the Shammi Silva-led executive committee, despite having 10 months left to its term, has not been officially revealed yet.
The ICC delegation’s visit comes after Gamage said that the government had not formally informed the world cricket body about appointing the interim committee.
The Silva-led committee resigned shortly after a meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
