In a crucial Indian Premier League game on Saturday, the Chennai Super Kings outplayed the Mumbai Indians by eight wickets with an incredibly professional performance that greatly improved their chances of making the playoffs.
Afghanistan’s left-arm spinner A lackluster Mumbai Indians were held to 159/7 by CSK thanks to a disciplined bowling effort led by Noor Ahmad.
Even though Naman Dhir led MI with 57 off 37 balls in a lackluster performance by the visitors after winning the toss, Noor produced outstanding figures of 2/26 in four overs while Anshul Kamboj claimed 3/32. MI’s difficulties were reflected in captain Hardik Pandya using 23 balls for scoring 18 runs.
With an undefeated 48-ball 67, Pandya’s adversary Ruturaj Gaikwad set a good example. Kartik Sharma (54 not out off 40 balls) and Urvil Patel (24 off 12 balls) provided strong support.
Sanju Samson, the star player for CSK, scored two boundaries early in the chase, but Jasprit Bumrah ended his stay with a stunning outswinger that took the outside edge, and Ryan Rickelton dived to his right to take the ball.
Samson faced the price for his lack of foot movement after punching Bumrah through covers in the previous delivery. 17 runs were scored in the third over after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hit Trent Boult for a six over deep square-leg.
Before Ruturaj scored a maximum against AM Ghazanfar, Krish Bhagat gave up 18 runs after Urvil Patel hammered him for two sixes and a four. However, as Patel played the ball onto his stumps, Ghazanfar dismissed him. After that, Gaikwad and Sharma took CSK home.
Earlier, Mukesh Choudhary got off to a great start for CSK, giving up only one run in the first over. Then, IPL rookie Ramakrishna made an instant impression by sending Will Jacks back with an incredible catch in the second over delivered by Anshul Kamboj.
The fans at MA Chidambaram Stadium was ecstatic as Ramakrishna rushed in from deep backward point and dived to complete the catch after Jacks attempted to hoick off a length ball outside off but missed.
Naman Dhir attempted to flick the ball, but it went off his bat and down to deep fine leg, making MI’s first boundary dubious. But to get things going for MI, the in-form Rickelton whacked Mukesh for two straight sixes, one over deep midwicket and the other over extra cover.
As he struck Kamboj for a maximum, Naman joined into the act. Prashant Veer was brought into the attack by CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rickelton greeted him with three sixes in a profitable over for MI, scoring 18 runs. MI finished the powerplay with 57 runs for the loss of one wicket as Naman hit Mukesh for his second six.
Shivam Dube dropped Naman on 19, and it was a sitter. However, CSK responded almost instantly with the huge wicket of Rickelton, who was removed by left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad after the opener went down on one knee to target the deep midwicket area but instead found Urvil Patel.
In his opening IPL over, Ghosh conceded just 7 runs, including a six from Suryakumar Yadav (21 off 12), who also hit Noor for a maximum and a four.
However, Ghosh caught Suryakumar in the deep for his first wicket as the batsman attempted to get on top of the ball and guide it over cover, but Suryakumar once more failed to turn his fast start into a meaningful contribution.
When Tilak Varma got a top-edge while attempting to sweep a spinning delivery for Ruturaj Gaikwad to complete a fine catch, MI, who were playing a lot of dot balls in the middle overs, lost another significant wicket. After then, Hardik and company were unable to get the big hits going, and MI struggled to gain any momentum.
