IPL 2026: First-ball six seals Yashasvi Jaiswal’s spot among IPL elites

After striking a six off the opening ball of the Rajasthan Royals’ IPL encounter against the Delhi Capitals on Friday at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Yashasvi Jaiswal became a member of an elite club. He became just the fifth batter in the history of the league to accomplish this.

Australian bowler Mitchell Starc’s delivery was dismissed by Jaiswal for a massive six over square leg off a short ball, marking the milestone.

Naman Ojha (RR) off Brad Hodge (KKR) in Durban in 2009 became the first batsman to knock a six off the opening delivery of an IPL match.

The remaining names on the list are:

  • Virat Kohli (RCB) off Varun Aaron (RR), Bengaluru, 2019
  • Phil Salt (KKR) off Nuwan Thushara (MI), Kolkata, 2024
  • Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings) off Khaleel Ahmed (CSK), Mullanpur, 2025

Jaiswal was dismissed on the third delivery of the over after being caught and bowled. Starc, who had missed the first half of the season owing to an injury, reacted swiftly. In an attempt to swing a full toss across the line, Jaiswal ended up top-edging it while Starc made a safe catch.

The six was Jaiswal’s sole scoring shot as he amassed six runs off three balls.

Delhi Capitals went on to defeat Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets, setting a record for their most successful IPL chase riding on Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul’s opening partnership of 110 off 57 balls.

After losing three straight games, the Delhi openers set the stage for a comeback victory by chasing down Rajasthan’s formidable 225-6, helped along by Riyan Parag’s 90 off 50 balls.

Delhi’s most successful run chase to date was 210 against the Lucknow Super Giants in 2025.
